The vote is in for Howie Ohman.  Howie was approved to be our next Worship Pastor with 97.3% of the vote in favor of 182 Yes and 6 No.  Thank you all for taking part in this process.

The Worship Pastor Search Team of Mauldin First Baptist is excited to introduce you to Howie Ohman.

For the last several months, our Search Team has reviewed over 100 resumes. At the same time, we have been constantly praying that God would reveal to us HIS choice and in HIS timing for our next Worship Pastor. During this process, we were introduced to Howie Ohman and due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we met with Howie through a Zoom video conversation. After this conversation, it became clear to us that Howie was not simply a musician who could organize a worship service, but rather a pastor with a deep love for God and His people to whom God has given musical gifts and skills to invite people into a powerful worship experience. We then brought Howie and his wife, Dawn, in for a weekend to get to know each other better, which confirmed and even surpassed our initial impressions.

As we have gotten to know Howie, we have come to see why his references are so strong and why he has been so highly recommended. Howie was born in Zion, Illinois, raised in Arizona, and has spent the last several years as the Worship Pastor at First Baptist Paducah, Kentucky, and Gracespring Bible Church in Richland, Michigan. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Church Music and Bible from the Arizona College of the Bible and his Master’s degree in Choral Conducting from the University of Houston. He is currently pursuing his doctorate in Church Music from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky.

Howie enjoys spending time with family, golf, ping-pong, and traveling. Howie says of his recent journey: “This has been a season of our life to wait on the Lord and to wait patiently. To put into practice every day that God loves us completely and His plan and timing is not only perfect but good for us. And to respond to Him with deep trust (Isn’t this worship?!). We believe all this in our call to Mauldin First Baptist, God’s timing has been perfect and good for us. We are excited at the prospect of being a part of the family at Mauldin First Baptist!”

Howie will be with us Friday, October 9 for a Churchwide Drop-In to be held in the Page Fellowship Hall from 5:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. Choir members, instrumentalists, audio/visual volunteers and anyone else connected with our worship ministries will meet in the Sanctuary at 6:30 p.m. to have a special time with Howie. We will have heavy hors d’oeuvres available, but we will also follow current CDC guidelines due to COVID-19. Masks and social distancing will be strongly encouraged and appreciated.

And on Sunday, October 11, Howie will speak and sing in both worship services, where you will hear Howie share a little bit about his life and faith. At the end of both worship services, the church will officially vote on calling Howie as our next Worship Pastor. Due to the COVID-19 situation, we realize many will be watching online, but not physically present to vote. We are making provisions so those attending remotely will be able to cast their vote. You can simply call the church office at 864-288-7835 between 9 a.m. and 12 Noon on Sunday, October 11 (we will have people staffing our phones for these calls), OR you can email your vote between 9 a.m. and 12 Noon to Nadine Chasteen, our Church Business Administrator, at [email protected]. All votes will be kept confidential.

Please be sure to go ahead and put it on your calendar to be with us this weekend and get to know Howie. Pray for him and for our church that God would lead us to an exciting new chapter in our worship ministry. We look forward to worshipping with you on Sunday, October 11!

Loving, Sharing, Serving, Making,

Wade Leonard
